Most umbrellas are made from a combination of materials such as; wood, composite metals, nylon, plastics and fibreglass. Many of these materials are unsustainable or not easily recycled, not built to last and almost all of them are produced in China. The majority of these materials are made both of and using fossil fuels, which have a huge impact on life as we know it on this planet.

“Failure should be our teacher, not our undertaker. Failure is delay, not defeat. It is a temporary detour, not a dead end. Failure is something we can avoid only by saying nothing, doing nothing, and being nothing.”-Denis Waitley.

Failure for me is an attempt at something where the outcome was undefined or unexpected. We learn from our failures and build on them, so they are truly never failures just experience. This work is an installation using my own failed materials, porcelain bottles. I created these bottles in an effort to explore the nature of the commodity, seeking to replicate the mass production processes. The bottles are filled with colored water, the porcelain over time soaked up the water and created traces and seepage in the gallery space.

During a trip to Las Vegas I observed the blatant excess and consumption. The consumerism that is so visually rampant, the lights that only highlight the darkness of a long vanished glamorous past; these were all themes I was contemplating while shooting this series. These analog, pseudo tourist snapshots speak to a time past within a still very relevant and functioning present. By documenting my trip with 35mm film cameras, I was able to more fully engage and immerse myself in the landscape to show a side of Vegas masked by the glittery lights.
